Devlog: Ability System

Hey, all!

I want to start sharing details with you about the work that is going on behind the scenes. As of this week, I will release a new blog post every Friday to provide company/community updates, along with a Devlog video spotlighting a new system in development. We know there are systems you are anxiously awaiting to take a sneak peek at and incorporate into your project. We are working as hard as we can to get these systems in your hands as soon as possible while still keeping our high standard for quality.

State of the Ability System

As you would expect from Games By Hyper, this is a modular system. The core of the system is an ability framework that lets you combine different effects, triggers, and conditions without needing to write custom code for each new ability. As with other Hyper systems, this can all be data-driven by adding or updating the associated datatable with your changes. This way, if you want a fireball that knocks back enemies, or a healing spell that triggers on a cooldown, it’s all possible with just a few clicks so even non-programmers on your team can whip up new abilities with ease. As you can see in the video, there will be a large variety of ability types that can be altered to fit your needs, including but not limited to: projectiles, area of effect, beams, etc.

By not using UE’s Gameplay Ability System (GAS), we are able to take the complexity (and lack of documentation) out of that existing system and make features more accessible for developers of all skill levels. Don’t be fooled though, as this is still quite a complex and technical system that we hope you will dig into and your players will enjoy.

In the past, I created and published games like Evolvation, but also had many different roles. For instance, I am a Teacher of Game Development at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
