Progression and Leveling

Progression is what gives the player a reason to care about what they just did. This category covers XP, levels, unlocks, reputation, achievements, and the reward structures that turn repeated actions into growth, identity, access, and long-term goals.

What This Enables

  • XP curves, player levels, skill-like unlocks, gated features, reputation shifts, and milestone rewards.
  • Progression for RPGs, survival games, faction systems, crafting unlocks, narrative gates, achievements, and long-term player goals.
  • Reward logic that can connect to quests, combat, crafting, exploration, reputation, inventory, and world events.

Working Advice

  • Decide what each reward means. Is it a level, unlock, reputation change, achievement, item, quest state, or score?
  • Keep progression data stable. These systems often become the glue between many other systems.
  • Test with tiny thresholds first. If gaining one level works cleanly, scaling to a full progression curve is much safer.
